NL - Modemuseum Hasselt brengt met de tentoonstelling 'Dressing the 20th Century/ De 20ste Eeuw Aangekleed.' Vrouwenmode in de eeuw van de ontwerpers' een bijzondere selectie van topstukken en nieuwe aanwinsten uit de eigen collectie. De expo focust op internationale bewegingen en hoogtepunten, en illustreert het veranderende discours van de vrouwenmode.

De 20ste eeuw kenmerkt zich door zeer uiteenlopende modes die elkaar in wervelend tempo opvolgen: van oriëntalisme, Roaring Twenties, de elegante jaren ’30, de nieuwe eenvoud en New Look tot de revolutionaire sixties, anti-mode & etnische invloeden, Dress for Succes en avant-garde, met een explosie van verschillende modestijlen aan het einde van de eeuw. 
Onder impuls van technologie, vraag en aanbod en culturele en sociale verandering krijgt het begrip mode een andere invulling. Ook de status van de ontwerper wordt geherdefinieerd. De exclusieve sfeer van de Parijse couture begin 20ste eeuw verschuift naar een instant globale toegankelijkheid van mode via het internet in de nineties. Parijs blijft het epicentrum, maar tegelijkertijd ontwikkelt designermode zich in Amerika, Italië, Groot -Brittannië en Japan. 

Daarnaast heeft de tentoonstelling aandacht voor Limburgse ontwerpers die een grote invloed hadden op de constructie van de Belgische mode-identiteit.

NL - Modemuseum Hasselt presents the exhibition 'Dressing the 20th Century. Women's fashion in the designer's century', a special selection of masterpieces and new acquisitions from the museum's own collection. The exhibition focuses on international movements and highlights, and illustrates the changing discourse of women's fashion.

The 20th century was characterised by very diverse fashions that succeeded each other at a whirlwind pace: from Orientalism, the Roaring Twenties, the elegant Thirties, the New Simplicity and New Look to the revolutionary Sixties, anti-fashion & ethnic influences, Dress for Success and avant-garde, with an explosion of different fashion styles at the end of the century. 
Driven by technology, supply and demand and cultural and social change, the concept of fashion is redefined. The status of the designer was also redefined. The exclusive atmosphere of Parisian couture at the beginning of the 20th century shifted to an instant global accessibility of fashion via the Internet in the nineties. Paris remained the epicentre, but at the same time designer fashion developed in America, Italy, Great Britain and Japan. 

In addition, the exhibition pays attention to Limburg designers who had a major influence on the construction of the Belgian fashion identity.
